SKSRT
WEBSITE
DESIGN

Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks Telephone offers a couple of approaches to website design. One, the SKSRT Website Builder, is a user-friendly component found at the SKRST Supersite. The other approach is custom website design using the versatility of combining Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) with XHTML coding. The SKSRT website is constructed using CSS and XHTML. More about these below.

SKSRT Website Builder

The SKSRT Website Builder is accessed through the SKSRT Supersite. It is one of the services which may be selected either by itself or in combination with other components at the site. The Supersite may be visited by clicking on this URL: http://domains.spruceknob.net. The Website Builder comes in four plans; a comparison chart at the site illustrates the differences. The cost for the plans vary with the number of web pages the plans allow you to generate. The one page plan does not have all the features found on the others.

Some of the features and options available include:

Additions and alterations to pages are done by means of a Microsoft-type What-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) page editor. Pages may be added to, corrected, and reviewed before they are published to the Web. Changes to your website may be made at any time by entering the Supersite through your customer account. More detailed information may be found at the Supersite knowledgebase.

SKSRT CSS-based Web Design

Most websites are constructed using a program which relies on some type of WYSIWYG page editor. This makes sites easier to build as little knowledge of the underlying code is required by the designer in order to produce good results. (To see the code underlying a web page, click on View-->Page Source.) However, this code is difficult to edit since content (what you read on the screen) is mixed up with presentation (what the content looks like on the screen).

CSS based design separates content from presentation. The advantages to this approach include:

A Word About Browsers

Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) browser commands a dominant position in terms of what people use to access the Internet. However, IE is behind other browsers in being able to correctly interpret web pages the way they were designed to be read. This is one reason web design programs generate bloated code--extra code must be added so that the earlier IE browsers can understand what they are supposed to display properly. Other browsers became compliant with web design standards at an earlier date and interpret the code properly without the "fixes" needed for IE.

If you are using IE6, upgrading to the current version, IE7, will help to view web pages properly. If you are using earlier IE versions like IE5.01 and IE5.5, you will be unable to upgrade to the more modern Microsoft versions. Instead, the Opera browser is a good choice since it is compatible back to IE version 5.01. Firefox 3.0.1, Opera 9.51, and Macintosh's Safari 3 browsers currently set the standard for compliance in correctly interpreting CSS web standards. These browsers can all be downloaded as an alternative to using current as well as earlier versions of IE. Download sites for these browsers are found on the Useful Links page.
